When you hear the phrase Mexican food, it usually brings to mind tamales,
enchiladas, tacos, and sides of beans and rice and chips. When you come to think
of it, there are plenty of low-carbohydrate Mexican dishes for you to enjoy.
Seafood and grilled meats take a center stage in Mexican cuisine while sauces
are based on fruits and vegetables. There is little starch, flour, sugar (and
even sugar alcohols) in meals.

Speaking of appetizers, you can keep the guacamole but skip the chips.
Guacamole or avocado sauce has a high nutritional content. It contains sodium,
potassium, vitamins C and B-6, copper, and folate. Ask if the restaurant has
jicama or cucumber slices to dip. Ceviche is a popular seafood dish in the
Philippines and South and Central America. It is citrus-marinated seafood made
from fresh raw fish. Fish meat is marinated in lime or lemon and served with raw
vegetables such as parsley, onion, and bell peppers. Ceviche is a tasty low-carb
dish for dieters eating low carb food. However, some nutrition experts warn that
raw seafood is a vector for different bacterial and viral pathogens and larger
parasites.

Albóndigas soup is not the best choice if you are on a very low-carb diet,
but it is a healthy low-carb option. Spanish albóndigas are served in tomato
sauce, as a main course or as an appetizer. Mexican albóndigas, on the other
hand, are served with vegetables and light broth.

There is a large selection of main dishes to choose from. You can choose from
grilled meats, seafood, chili verde, fajitas, tostada salads, and other dishes.
A fajita is a classic Mexican dish made from grilled meat (shrimp, pork,
chicken) and served on a corn or flour tortilla. Popular condiments are
guacamole, sour cream, lettuce, salsa, tomato, and cheese. In many Mexican
restaurants, meat is served with condiments and tortillas. Chili verde is
another low-carb option. It is a spicy steak made from pork and cooked in
tomatillos, garlic, chicken broth, and roasted green chilis. The spiciness of
the dish is often balanced with habanero peppers, serrano, or jalapeño.

There are other low-carb Mexican foods that are great for weight control. You
can have a grilled steak with spices, grilled vegetables with salsa, or chicken
dishes. Avoid nachos, tacos, enchiladas, and burritos because they are high in
carbohydrates. The fillings of some dishes are perfectly fine, and you can ask
to have them separately. Click here for more information on low carb foods and diets.
